Overview:

General Simonds, commander of the 2nd Canadian Corps, had insisted that he have a supply road with which to maintain the momentum of his attack and planned to use the Goch-Xanten railroad bed for this purpose. The raised track was flanked on both sides by low, soggy farmland. Feeling pressure from higher command, Simonds ordered the 4th Canadian Armoured Division to seize the Hochwald Gap and continue on to Xanten. The western entrance to the gap was controlled by a small rise, Point 73.

2015-09-21(A) Michael Rodgers vs Bruno L'Archeveque Canadian winI played the Canadians in HS31 PROTESTING THE SPECULATIVE against Bruno L’Archeveque by VASL. Bruno had two guns and 3 squads, as well as both leaders on the victory mountain. There were two squads on each flank. I committed my board 5 forces to traveling up the wooded road. The convoy did what the convoy is forced to do, but Bruno did me a big favour, I believe, by firing on it in the first turn DFPh. This freed the convoy. On the next turn, one AC sacrificed itself to the one ATG that could see the now freed units when they reach the railway. Then the remaining former convoy units moved as individual units up the east flank. One carrier ventured into the centre of the board and found the other ATG and then died, but that gun was out of position for doing any more harm. The east ATG on the mountain shot again and broke. The board five forces took a few casualties when they left the woods to approach the middle board, but the Germans lost both squads that were on that flank. The Canadians there took a slow turn moving up while the former convoy units sped towards the hill. During German turn 3 DFPh, the Canadians on the west flank took some low odds shots that did the impossible. The shots broke both gun crews (the broken gun had just gotten repaired) on the mountain, as well as one of the three squads up there. On Canadian turn four, his rallies were unsuccessful, so I was able to move up carriers from the east flank to use up, then tie up, the two good order squads. It was obvious that every broken unit on the mountain would be eliminated for failure to rout, and I had a decent probability of breaking the remaining two squads. Bruno decided to concede at that point. He had nothing to stop the board 5 forces from getting on the mountain. He felt the German reinforcements would not be able to retake the mountain, and I agreed. I think his mistake was freeing up the convoy early. This convoy is more restricted than normal, being forced by SSR to stay on a road that will take it to the centre of the map. I believe the German needs to wait until the convoy is at least part way there to have it in a bad attacker location and to have some good shots at the convoy units.
