Overview:
The Germans occupied Hungary and placed the Hungarian 1st Army under the control of Heeresgruppe Nordukraine. The Germans then coerced General Geza Lakatos to lead the 1st Army out of the Carpathian Mountains and into Galicia to draw Soviet forces away from the German-Romanian front near Jassy. As part of this operation, Brigadier General Bela Lengyel’s 16th Hungarian Infantry Division was to seize Ottynia.
