Overview:

Assault gun crews were highly trained, elite artillery units assigned to provide close fire support to the infantry. All assault gun crews were volunteers up until 1944 and had proven in pre-war trials to be more accurate gunners than tank crews. In addition to close fire support, they also provided additional anti-tank capability. On the second day of Barbarossa, a German infantry unit was behind schedule in securing its objective, a Russian village near the Bug River. An assault gun platoon was sent forward to provide the necessary firepower. After the platoon leader conferred with the infantry commander, the Germans launched their coordinated attack. The assault guns preceded the infantry into the village, firing at targets of opportunity as they presented themselves. As they rounded a corner, they were faced with a Russian heavy tank. . .

2024-12-08(A) Mark Thompson vs Carl Nogueira Russian winAlbany 2024-Round 5. On of the most enjoyable and intense ASL games I've played. A brutal see-sawing 7 hour battle that ended at 2am with the building locations tied - and hence a Russian victory. At times, each player was alternately convinced that their cause was hopeful or hopeless (e.g., KV-1 mechanical break-down immobilization, Commissar sniper head shot, German 9-1 pin on 8+2 shot preventing seizure of two additional building locations in the penultimate turn). A fantastic scenario with an awesome opponent to cap off a great Albany tournament. A blast!
2024-11-22(A) Tuomo Lukkari vs Andreas Larsson German winSupporting fire 2024 1st round
2024-03-09(A) Andy Bagley vs Neil Brunger German winReally tough game, and couldn't have been closer. The first couple of turns were "shadow boxing", with both sides manoeuvring for position and little shooting as I attempted to surround the village. Things heated up when the Russian tanks arrived and I tried to force my way into the village from all side, and it became a case of last man standing. In the end, the Russians just lacked enough troops to stop me doing a final grab of buildings on the last turn, and I held just enough for the win.
