Overview:

Kampfgruppe Schütte and Kampfgruppe Stenckhoff of the 21st Panzer Division had secured the Maizila Pass to the south and Kampfgruppe Schütte headed north to engage two battalions of the 168th RCT on Djebel Ksaira while Kampfgruppe Stenckhoff headed north-west to Bir el Hafey in order to swing round and make the approach to Sidi Bou Zid from the west during the afternoon. Under heavy shelling from the Kampfgruppe Schütte, Colonel Thomas Drake requested permission to retreat, which was denied by Fredendall, who ordered him to hold his positions and wait for reinforcements, which never arrived. By 5 p.m. Kampfgruppe Stenckhoff and the 10th Panzer Division had attacked CC A which had been driven nearly 15 miles (24 km) west to Djebel Hamra, with the loss of 44 tanks and many guns. The infantry were marooned on the high ground at Djebel Lessouda, Djebel Ksaira and Djebel Garet Hadid. . . . During the night, the 1st US Armored Division commander Orlando Ward moved up Combat Command C (CC C) to Djebel Hamra, to counter-attack Sidi Bou Zid on 15 February but the attack was over flat exposed country and was bombed and strafed early in the move, then found itself between the two Panzer divisions, with more than 80 Panzer IV, Panzer III and Tiger I tanks.

2024-09-16(D) John Garlic vs Victor Rosso German win
2023-11-12(D) Paul Works vs Tom Meier German winAs the American, I attempted to take on the PzIIIs first - with the intent to take them out and get behind the hillocks before the PzIVs got "within range." Did not work very well. The annoying PzIIIs get APCR extra-shot chances and as the Shermans have to get within 12 hexes to get decent To Hit numbers, the APCR can be a killer - and it was. One PzIII on Turn 2 took out three Shermans in the German PFPh. Ouch. I did eventually kill all but one of the PzIIIs, but by then the PzIVs were within 20 hexes and at that range (sounds a bit crazy) their 75L guns (with Black To Hits) really overwhelmed the American 75s (with Red To Hits). The Germans were getting 9 or 10s to hit, while the Americans were getting 5-6s to hit. This quickly was a bloody mess for the Americans. In the end, I had killed 5 x PzIIIs and 3 x PzIVs, but all my M4s were dead (2/3s on fire...). A better tactic might be to race the Shermans over to interdict the PzIVs when those tanks enter on turn 3 - and keeping at long range from the PzIIIs, where the latter's APCR is not effective, and the 50L guns have a degraded hit chance. Still, it was a fun game and an interesting challenge for the Americans.
2022-07-25(D) Kevin Duval vs Dwayne Duval German winAmericans made mistake of trying to get to east edge instead of concentrating on eliminating German OB forces early. Piece-meal feast for the Germans.
2022-07-25(A) Dwayne Duval vs Kevin Duval German win
2022-01-30(D) Shane Pask vs D German winAfter checking the record, I played with American balance (no German AL). However, the Germans just pulled in behind the hillocks to get HD and slowly picked off my Shermans. The large target and high velocity (L) guns made hitting the tanks easy and eventually a turret hit or low roll against the formidable hull front armour took its toll. The longest range German kill was from 30 hexes. I had no tanks left by turn 7 (1 recalled, 1 immobilised and abandoned, all others wrecked). Any hit by the Yanks was likely a kill but red to hit numbers at long range against hull down targets kept the Germans safe enough.
My VP tally was actually in front for a while on turns 4 and 5 which gave me some hope.
