Overview:

General Omar Bradley devised Operation Cobra with the simple goal of cracking the German lines in Normandy's bocage country and achieving a breakout. The American offensive was scheduled to begin with a bang -- a carpet-bombing attack along a four-mile area of the German lines followed by an assault by "Lightning Joe" Collins' VI Corps. Cobra began on the 25th with thousands of planes delivering their bomb loads with devastating effect. Collins' units now had to follow up this attack before the Germans could regroup.

2022-07-24(A) Vic Lauterbach vs JM American winJim and I both read the replay in ASL Journal Six, and he drew the Germans, so I offered him the balance which he nobly declined. My plan was a double flank attack: the right group into the CC4 orchard to block the German reinforcements, and the left group into the buildings. My plan didn't survive contact with Jim's tough, flexible defense. He left a 238 w/HMG and dummies on the BB6-EE5 road to slow me down while his main force quickly fell back to AA3/AA5. I rushed my attack on those buildings, and it failed leaving three broken HS. HoB made Jim's 238 w/MMG fanatic and his 9-1 a 9-2. HS have no Smoke and no Assault Fire, so things looked grim when two 548s slipped around my block to BB2/CC2. In GT5, my Prep fire broke the 238 w/MMG in AA5, and I got a 667 into AA6 to kept it DM'd. My stacks in Y5, CC5 and CC5 then cleared AA5, but it still went down to the wire. I broke the two AA3 548s in GT6, and Jim's final push to retake AA3 failed in GT7 CCPh. This one is a good tutorial on Bocage [B9.5] and a very good small, all-infantry battle.
2009-04-05(D) Ian Willey vs Duane Halford American winStarted well and looked to be going my way but suddenly I could not hit anything and all the shots coming in had the opposite effect.
