Overview:

With overcast skies hampering bombing missions and poorly coordinated artillery preparations, the Russian 3rd Guards Army made only lackluster gains on the first morning of the “Little Saturn” Offensive. Combat in the 203rd Rifle Division’s 592nd Rifle Regiment’s sector was typical. In the early morning of the 16th, the 592nd moved up to its starting positions on the Chir River. The river was covered with thick ice but the crossing was made difficult by Germans manning defensive positions in buildings scattered along the river. After vicious fighting, the Russian infantry was able to gain the far side of the river and advance as far as the train station. Once the Russian advance had gone to ground, Axis counterattacks began immediately.

2023-12-02(D) Vic Lauterbach vs JM German / Romanian winI drew the defending Russians in this winter clash and set up to contest buildings O9, S9, DD5 and EE7 but hold on to the back six (northeast of the Y10-Y2-M1 roads). Jim was aggressive, as always. My OBA broke 22EE8 and BB6 attackers after they broke my defenders, but Panzers cut my rout paths and both buildings fell. I shortened my lines quickly, but after 3 turns, I was down 5.5 MMCs in exchange for two Pz38s, a Romanian HS and the German 8-0. With SMOKE and a more deliberate Romanian attack, Jim took 49O9, S9 and W9 that I planned to concede but then I drew a red chit, lost 22Z2 to the rallied German infantry and lost 22M2 to a berserk 347. Jim now had 12 buildings and I had to counterattack. My attempts to retake M2 and CC5 failed, giving Jim another building and the win. Jim: The key was avoiding woods where Vic's OBA could hammer my infantry. Except for turn 2, I did that. Using tanks as mobile MGs and two risky moves into 1:1 CC's gave me the edge early then I hung on. Good scenario but the defenders are spread thin and face tough choices if forced to retake buildings.
