Budapest had fallen and the Russians were threatening the oil refineries of Nagykanisza in Hungary. The weary 2rd SS Panzer Army, short of supplied and filled with replacements, was once again deployed to the east to face the dug in Russians. The German attack was plagued by marshy terrain in a spring thaw.
