The main Allied line at Abucay was temporarily stabilized after several days of hard fighting. It was at this time the American 31st Infantry Regiment was ordered to counterattack. Nicknamed the Thirsty-First for their legendary Manila drinking bouts, the Polar Bears of 31st moved off the line of departure just after 8 in the morning. They initially met little resistance as they pushed up Trail #12. However, with each step the Japanese defense stiffened. The right flank of the attack stumbled into a deep ravine and had difficulty getting out the other side, eventually becoming pinned down by an unseen adversary. The fight swiftly grew to close quarters with hand grenades flying both ways.
