Overview:

After failing to take Madrid by a head-on assault, the Spanish Nationalists opened a new offensive to the south of the capital, with the goal of crossing the Jarama River and cutting the Madrid-Valencia road. The majority of the assaulting troops were Spanish Foreign Legion, but the force also included the German expeditionary force Legion Condor with their panzers and 8.8cm FlaK guns. - - - - This medium-sized eight-turn scenario features a small but powerful Nationalist force with German-manned HMG, FlaK 18's and Panzer I's attacking dug-in and numerous but not particularly well-equipped Republican defenders on Board 18.

2023-02-11(A) Jobbo Fett vs RootinPutin Spain Nationalist winPlayed Jarama Proving Ground by Friendly Fire and the Republicans were punching bags for the dice. It seemed like nothing went their way, with both the AT and INF gun malfunctioning, on top of 1 of 2 MMGs. The Nationalists bore down on a unlucky handful of enemy squads and managed to kill them all by turn 3, leaving the door wide open for the necessary exit vps to mosey on out unhindered for the rest of the game - under cover from 2 flak 88 guns and 5 panzer IBs that drove around with impunity. Maybe the setup is just too important in this scenario, and we did have some very bad dice for the defender, but I wonder if the overall map size shouldve been cut down for a slightly thicker defensive line, all things considered...
2021-11-09(A) Michael Rodgers vs Bruno L'Archeveque Spain Nationalist winA slightly flawed Republican setup made worse by numerous weapon malfunctions allowed the Nationalists to win this match before the final turn.
2020-06-09(D) Chuck Dye vs kevin killean Spain Nationalist win
2015-06-01(D) Doug McMullen vs David H Spain Nationalist winDespite losing as the Republicans (I was outplayed AND the dice hated me -- and it was still moderately close) I think Nationalists should probably take balance. It's a good, not particularly complicated scenario with interesting maneuver challenges for both players. I played the Republicans with a hold the line type defense -- a mistake I think. If I were to play it a second time a fighting withdrawal I think would cause the Nationalists much more problems. If you like early war this is definitely worth a play.
