Overview:

Early in 1942 American forces in the Pacific area started an offensive campaign. Along with the invasion of Guadacanal, it was decided to raid the Makin Atoll in the Gilbert Islands. The purpose was to determine Japanese strength and to ferret out the defensive structure of the Gilberts. The unit picked for the job was the Second Raider Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel Evans Carlson. The Raiders, along with the XO James Roosevelt, the President’s son, were taken to the Island on the Submarines USS Nautilus and USS Argonaut. From the moment the Marines hit the water things started to go wrong. First, the motors on their rubber rafts refused to operate. Then, after the arduous struggle to reach the shore, the Japanese were alerted of the raiders presence by an accidentally discharged weapon. Undaunted, the Marines continued with the mission.
