Overview:
The Northern prong of Operation Galvanic attacked Makin Atoll while the Marines attacked Tarawa. The 27th U.S. Infantry Division sent the 165th Infantry, a detachment of the 105th Infantry, and parts of the 193rd Tank Battalion. The Japanese defense was concentrated in the center of the Island with tank traps on the west and east side. The green army troops proceeded at an infuriatingly slow pace. The Japanese force slowed the army with snipers and well dug in positions. Green troops fired at anything and at one point almost killed the Corps commander. The third day of the operation K Company supported by tanks was tasked to clear the last elements of resistance in the main defensive area.Attacker: American (USMC) (K Company, 2nd Battalion, 165th Infantry and 193rd Tank Battalion)
