Overview:

Operation EPSOM was into it's second day. The British 49th West Riding Division steamrolled southward through the initial lines of the 12 SS HitlerJugend Division behind a devastating artillery barrage. The vanguard of the advance hit the town of St. Manvieu which was the headquarters for the 4th Battalion of the 26th Regiment. The town had been mostly cleared, but fanatical resistance in a few areas slowed the whole advance down. The British infantry soon was separated from the armor support. The German command post became the crucible of the fighting. The HQ was in a large house near a farm and a large park. The HQ element became the last strong point separating the British advance from the bridges of the Oden. The HQ element had no heavy weapons, only a few Panzer Faust and magnetic mines. Two mortars had been brought into the park, but only had 25 shells. A PaK 40 was sitting unmanned just outside the park. Suddenly like a wild west fight the park was surrounded by a dozen or more Shermans.
