Overview:

After the swift capture of the town of Victoria and the island’s two airfields, the remaining Japanese had been compressed into an area of rugged ridges and broken ground surrounded on three sides by mangrove swamps. For four days the area was pounded by field guns, mortars, air strikes and even the 8-inch guns of the HMS Shropshire. By June 20, patrols were penetrating deep into the area, and the final assault was planned for June21. The Japanese had other plans, and during the night a raiding party crept through the swamps and into the supply elements in Victoria harbor, causing havoc. At dawn the situation stabilized, and a two company attack pressed ahead, this time supported by a terrifying new weapon, “Frogs” Matildas mounting flamethrowers.
