Overview:

MARKET-GARDEN planners, unwilling to expose vital transport planes to anti-aircraft fire over Arnhem, chose landing and drop zones for 1st Airborne Division significantly west of the Arnhem road bridge. Consequently, 1st Parachute Brigade would have to cover nearly seven miles on foot to reach its primary target. Three routes - dubbed "Leopard", "Tiger", and "Lion" - were used for the three battalion sized columns. "Lion", the southernmost route, proved to be relatively resistance-free and the lead units of Colonel John Frost's 2nd Parachute Battalion reached the bridge around 8 PM. SS-Panzergrenadier Training and Replacement Battalion 16 was stationed in Arnhem and Oosterbeek. Its 2nd Company had conducted a training exercise just that morning east of Wolfheze. They had arrived in early September and had been told to prepare to defend against possible airborne attack. Lacking the strength to block all the routes, the Germans set up a defensive line across two, "Leopard" and "Tiger".
Attacker: British (A Company, 3rd Parachute Battalion, 1st Parachute Brigade, 1st Airborne Division)

2022-03-04(A) Andy Bagley vs Paul Legg German (SS) winSo the scenario card illustration shows parachutes dropping, but this isn’t a paradrop scenario. The British paratroops – all 6-4-8 squads – have their feet firmly on the ground and are facing German 4-4-7’s that look like second-line but are in fact SS.
This felt like a tough assignment for the Brits, who have to cross more than half the length of board 14a to exit, although the exit requirement is reduced if they can capture some buildings along the road. However, my failure may have been due to mistaken strategy: what was supposed to be a small flanking force on the left with a 9-1 leader and a couple of squads somehow turned into my main attack when it met little early resistance. They reached the far end of the board, but the exit requirement is between hexes G20 and K20 – a small space – and here they found their way blocked by a German MG in the last building and well-placed AA guns. Meanwhile my best leader in the centre had insufficient support to make any progress, and I ended up conceding on Turn 5.
Maybe a better British strategy would be to concentrate on driving through the centre, where there is more cover and capturing building reduces the exit VP requirement. An interesting scenario though, with plenty of options for both sides.

2021-10-06(A) Tom Abromaitis vs DrawSolo German win. Really like the scenario. Have to drive harder than you think to meet the exit conditions I think.
2021-09-23(A) Indy Lagu vs Rob Oler German (SS) winTough to say...our playing wasn't close at all. Rob claims he diced me to death. There
may be something to it...I lost almost half my force, and I wasn't giving Rob any -2 shots.
To be fair, I did lose two squad equivalents to 12 MC/Rally rolls. I would certainly give
this another shot.
