German (SS)American
Overview:
By December 19th, Kampfgruppe Peiper had begun to face ever increasing resistance, and it had nearly reached the apogee of its penetration into American lines. Peiper's single-minded goal was to push through to the Meuse River. Unfortunately, Volksgrenadier Division 12 to the north and his own division's Kampfgruppe Hansen to the south had failed in their role of maintaining flank security. His kampfgruppe found itself isolated with the American 117th Infantry Regiment pushed the small German security detachment out of Stavelot. SS-Panzer Division 1 tasked the followup unit, Kampfgruppe Sandig, with retaking Stavelot. Along with armored elements belonging to Peiper -- including Tiger 222 -- KG Sandig attacked towards the Stavelot bridge late that afternoon.Attacker: German (SS) (Kampfgruppe Sandig, supported by 7. SS-Panzer Kompanie, SS-Panzer Regiment 1 and 2. SS-Panzer Kompanie, Schwere SS-Panzer Abteilung 501)
Defender: American (1st Battalion, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division supported by the 823rd Tank Destroyer Battalion)

2013-08-28 | (A) X von Marwitz | vs | Chris Mazzei | German (SS) win | When first looking at the scenario card and the board, this one looks very interesting. When thinking a little deeper about it, the scenario loses some of its appeal. Basically, ONLY way across that River (not Stream!) is the Bridge. Because it is pretty much walled in, the amphibious Kübelwagen won't go swimming. The only appearance they are bound to make is to speed through for some EVPs if a path can be beaten clear. For the German, getting down SMOKE is absolutely essential. And one better gets deeply into the nuances and limitations on the placement of SMOKE on a Bridge - so much at this point: Yes - Inf Smoke, Veh Smoke grenade, OBA Smoke; No - ordnance SMOKE, sD, sP, sN, sM. Go figure... It appears that the US has a choice on which side of the stream to put their Schwerpunkt. But if they should try to stand up to the Germans right in their entry area, there will be likely many US prisoners as the ONLY way out is across the Bridge. The US have plenty to HIP but not much good choices where to do so. Placement of AT Mines on/behind the Bridge on paved road seems without much alternative (possible per SSR), but you'd better read up how known AT mines can be got rid of. The most interesting thing of the scenario might be to figure it out before play. Playing it itself may be dicey depending on how SMOKE works for the Germans. I think if it does, they are hard to stop. If it doesn't the Germans are in trouble. Furthermore much depends on whether the US can get off a successful BAZ shot on a worthy target before being anihilated or not. If you are lucky and things even out, this can be an interesting and tense scenario. Otherwise, so lala only. I would not recommend it for tournaments.
2012-05-26 | (A) Richard Carter | vs | tate rogers | American win | probably did not use smoke enough initially, was distracted by amphibious units.
2009-09-03 | (D) David Ramsey | vs | Martin Barker | American win | Swapped sides and tried again. German was beaten by a lucky couple of shots from the bazoka crews
2009-09-01 | (A) David Ramsey | vs | Martin Barker | German (SS) win | Nice scenario. Interesting situation keen to play this one again. |
