Overview:
On July 25th, several hours before the main attack towards Gandesa by the Army of the Ebro, the XIVth International Brigade was assigned the thankless and difficult task of drawing attention and maximizing the Nationalists' firepower in its sector. Carefully planned but conducted with makeshift means and weak artillery support, and due to the inherent difficulty of a night operation, a triple crossing attempt was concentrated on a single spot. The Commune de Paris Battalion, which covered itself with some glory during the defense of Madrid back in 1936, succeeded in seizing some ground on the west side of the river. After repelling several attacks on the first day, the Battalion had to hold its ground against a powerful attack by some of the fiercest Nationalist fighters.Attacker: Spanish Republicans (Elements of the Battalion Commune de Paris, XIVth IB, 45th Division and MG platoon of the Henry Barusse 4th Battalion)
