Overview:

As the drive on Moscow slowed due to supply problems and general winter, STAVKA was given time to deploy fresh troops from other fronts. The 78th Infantry, Siberian veterans of the Mongolian frontier, were transferred 6000 miles to use skillful ambushes and delaying tactics to slow the panzer’s march on Moscow. Near the River Istra, they were finally ordered to halt and fight. The snow-covered fields and the medieval town of Istra itself would become a battlefield for several weeks. On 26th November, the 78th was renamed the “9th Guards Infantry”, but needed no special titles to display élan or heroism. Squeezing out of the pincers formed by 10th Panzer Division and 2nd SS “Das Reich”, the “marvelous Siberians” would regroup and launch a counterattack to retake the historic town.

2021-01-03(A) Tony Fermendzin vs Arshish Kapadia Russian winThe Germans set up forward forcing the Russians to fight their way onto the map. The Russians entered in the center/west. The Germans refused to budge in front of the Russian onslaught and the Russians were able to get into CC and kill two German squads along with their 8-0 leader, at the cost of two Russian squads. An end run by the Russian was able to grab the undefended victory building in the south/center, with the remainder of the Russians pushing east towards the victory building in the north. Russian reinforcements tipped the scale and the Russians were able to take the second required building after an unlucky FPF shot left the German 9-2 leader, squad and MMG broken. After a last ditch counter attack by the Germans on the northern-most victory building fell short, we called the game. A tense and exciting game!!

2020-11-04(A) O Ramaille vs Laurent Tisseyre Russian winThe Siberians launched their main assault from the North while a small group progressed through the Western buildings. Despite accurate shots from the Germans, the Siberians turned out to be unstoppable never breaking morale. Bloody closed combats took their toll on both German and Russian units. A first objective fell on Russian hands. The German regrouped to defend the other two objectives expecting reinforcements from the East but were still too scattered to stop the Russian advance. The reinforcements came instead from the North. The Germans conceded on turn 4 with the Russians in position to get the second objective.
