Overview:
On 7 September, the Italians quit the Axis and now wanted to join the war on the Allied side. Codeword “Achse” loosed the advance on the coast to disarm the Italian troops. The Italian VI Corps refused to capitulate and would have to be forcibly disarmed. The 1st Battalion received orders to clear Jasen Pass so as to allow movement in and around it. Hill 795 rose steeply just to the east of the pass and K.U.K. Castle was situated on it. The Italians, who had added many concrete bunkers, repaired it. They established five triangular bunkered positions on a ridge. The ground in front of the defenses was barren and wire-covered. The reinforced 2 Regiment of the SS-Gebirgs Division “Prinz Eugen” advanced to take the positions. At 0545 hours on a clear morning, the silence was shattered by the firing of a MG42, opening the assault.Attacker: German (SS) (2 Regiment of the SS-Gebirgs Division “Prinz Eugen”)
