Overview:
The second day of the German assault on downtown Stalingrad saw elements of Infanterie Division 71 and Panzer Division 24 making rapid progress in their drive to reach the Volga. In spite of suffering heavy casualties in the fierce house-to-house fighting, the Germans were highly confident they would capture the central landing stage by nightfall. All that stood in there way were a few of Sarayev’s NKVD militia and the last remnants of Major Khopko’s tank brigade which consisted of some 100 mean armed with tommy guns and a solitary tank which had been knocked out at the station crossing but could till fire its gun. General Chuikov ordered these units to hold until relieved “…or else”.Attacker: German (Infanterie Regiment 194 and Panzer Division 24)
