Overview:

After almost three days of intense combat, the US 45th Division's 179th Infantry Regiment was nearly destroyed by relentless German attacks. Nevertheless, the exhausted GIs, mostly from the regiment's hapless 2nd Battalion, occupied the fortified defenses of the Beachhead Line along the Lateral Road. By order of the corps commander, Major General John P. Lucas, there was to be no retreat from the Beachhead Line. Late on the 18th, veteran Lt Horst Henrich, commanding 4 Company, I Bataillon, 29th Panzergrenadier Regiment, 3rd Panzergrenadier Division received orders to attack the American defenses along the Lateral Road. Though Henrich and his men were experienced, fresh, and motivated, the Americans were, as they would soon find out, far from beaten.
Attacker: German (4 Company, I Bataillon, 29th Panzergrenadier Regiment)
