Overview:

The 2nd Battalion Irish Guards relieved the Welsh Guards around the town of Aam and took up positions along the highway to fend off any German counter attacks against the Nijmegen bridgehead. During the night of September 30, the Germans increased pressure along the British positions with heavy shelling and armored probes closely supported by engineers and infantry. A troop of Sherman tanks restored the situation but at dawn on October 1, the Germans renewed their attack with man packed flamethrowers to burn the Irish out. . .

2023-09-17(A) Mark Thompson vs Peter Catchpole (British) DrawSave for one Panther knocked-out in a flanking move around the Gully, the German three wing attack reached the Eastern side of the victory road relatively unscathed. Two more Panthers fell attempting to VBM freeze units in large Building adjacent to the central crossroads, but the third succeeded and the Germans got close to securing blocking positions but ultimately did not have enough time or men to push the British out of enough Building hexes Adjacent to the road. We then discovered that the British had too many squads at set-up - due to a not uncommon error of failing to delete the squad when deploying pre-game - and called it a draw. Great fun, including CC featuring two AFVs, 2 MMCs, 1 Prisoner!
2018-03-01(A) Jeff B vs Ed Donoghue German winMy opponent didn't realize I wasn't limited to an eastern entry and thus was caught with some units facing the wrong way. His carrier was easily dispatched with, but he managed to break a small stack of infantry on the hill as well as a FT-toting HS. The Germans bounced right back however and knocked out two tanks the next turn. One to a sneaky LOS past a wall, another to a FT HS who managed to creep up concealed for a point blank shot. They did lose a tank of their own to the last of the hidden guns. The first half of Turn 3 was highly disappointing for the Irish as they shot a dud from one of the 76LLs, only to be destroyed by a return CH. The second half was even worse when they flubbed two golden opportunities to eliminate two more German tanks, breaking the MA on their sole remaining tank. They did manage to survive a FT shot, BH the 9-2 to a 10-2 in fact. But the tank who had survived the dud the round before and another hit this round came back with a KIA, killing the newly minted 10-2, another squad, and breaking the gun crew. At this point they threw in the towel as there would be no stopping the German horde from picking up the broken remnants.
2013-03-22(A) Andy Beaton vs Ardneh German winBritish were toughened by a 102- and a hero, but his tanks were cleaned out, leaving the infantry along the road subject to heavy short range blasting with lots of rate. British made it to turn 5 with 10 points, but couldn't afford to lose any units.
