Overview:
The Canadian First Division had stormed the Hitler Line around Pontecorvo, followed by the Fifth Division exploiting the breach in the enemy line. Six miles northwest of the Canadians lay the Melfa river, flowing through the Liri valley. The Melfa offered the Germans an opportunity to stabilise the situation and halt the enemy advance. The 1st Panzer Regiment, little more than a reinforced company by this stage, was ordered to secure the Melfa. But a Canadian recce troop had already slipped across the river and established a tenuous bridgehead, awaiting the arrival of reinforcements from "Griffin Force".Attacker: German (reserve elements 90th Panzer Grenadier Regiment with 1st Panzer Regiment and 1st Fallschirmjager Division)
