Overview:

The stage was set after a comparatively quiet night, following the carnage the previous two days. The Soviets had managed to dislodge the Germans from the center of Ponyri, but the German force-comprised mainly of Infanterie-Division 292 with supporting armor from Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 244-surrounded Ponyri to the north and west, refusing to give up their push to recapture key points of the town lost the previous day. The German plan employed their tried-and-true "pincer" tactic which had been used to great success from the outset of Barbarossa. The defending Soviets, with men from the 307th Rifle Division and the elite 4th Guards Airborne Division, along with supporting armored units, had plans of their own. They had dug themselves deeply into the ruins of the shattered town. They too prepared their own counterattacks from the south and east. The slaughter at Ponyri would continue.
