Overview:

On the night of May 5th, Lt. General Masaharu Homma sent his initial Corregidor invasion task force out. Corregidor represented the final obstacle to completing his mission of taking the Philippine Islands. Already the task assigned to him had taken much longer than thought possible. General Homma sent General Kitano’s 4th Division to lead the attack on Corregidor. The 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 61st Infantry, reinforced by tanks from the 7th Tank Regiment, were the initial Japanese units to land.
