Overview:

On the eve of Operation Barbarossa, SS-Kampfgruppe Nord was upgraded to a full SS Motorized Division. Not only the outfit's designation was new to the men, but also their weapons and in many respects the whole concept of warfare. The attack route lay through rough and unscouted terrain swept in haze from the prepatory barrage. Under the worst possible conditions would the Nord troops receive their baptism of fire. - - - - In this 6.5-turn scenario, green SS 4-4-7s with armor support fight their way through blazes, smoke, mine fields, Russian infantry, commissars and BT tanks. With force ratio as your only advantage, can you do better than the historical disaster?

2018-07-28(A) Stephen dedier vs Shipley, Eric German (SS) winWhen I first looked at this scenario, I thought it was going to be very tough for the Germans. The mines, green troops and lack of leaders as well as the ability to place blaze and smoke in woods hexes to really limit the movement.
I put a few units in the South and a few in the North but concentrated going right up the middle.
My I deployed extra HS to push forward and drop concealment. Eric had his MMG in a foxhole in the road giving the likelihood of a firelane across the bridge. I assaulted mostly via the streams and his MMG malfed twice without doing any damage!
I had my PzIII shooting at the foxhole and scored a critical hit on the infantry eliminating the squad and breaking the leader. This really opened things up.
I managed to trap another squad on the North side and eliminate it while moving to take the Northern bridge and building. The freed up road allowed me to push my MMG through his minefield in the road (a bit of luck there) and setup the MMG and a tank to support.
His units had to fall back to defend the village and his tanks came on in support.
In the German turn 5 a cower and some good shooting pinned his squad in the building and allowed me to move in for CC. I eliminated the squad and took the building for 8 VP (2 for mobile AFVs although 1 had malfed its MA. 2 for the bridges 1 for the building and 3 for eliminated MMC.

All in all this is a fun scenario but I was helped by the dice.
