Overview:
As the Luzon campaign was winding down, Lt. Gen. Homma, commander of the 14th Japanese Army, turned his attention to securing the remaining unconquered islands of the Philippines. A small foothold had been gained on Mindanao, the southern most of the islands, on December 20, 1941. However, no further effort was made until late April 1942, when a coordinated attack at four separate points of the island was launched by the Japanese. Maj. General Kiyotake Kawagichi landed unopposed on the west coast and proceeded north along Route 1, one of the few roads on the island. At a choke point along the road to Bacolod, Lt. Col. Robert Vesey’s 73rd Infantry Regiment blew the bridge over the stream and employed two of the islands five precious mountain guns in an effort to halt the enemy’s advance.Attacker: Japanese (Elements of 124th Inf.
