Overview:
On July 18th, General Macon, the commanding officer of the 83rd, launched an attack across the Varde river. Around 1800, the 329th IR launched a secondary attack coming from the west, while Colonel York's 331st IR launched a main thrust from the north. Taking advantage of the night, the engineers managed to build a provisional bridge of the Taute river. Well supported by artillery and some well laid smoke screens, the 331st IR managed to seize a bridgehead in the hamlet.
