Overview:
The 3rd Romanian Army formed the link between the German 11th and 17th Armies and played a role in clearing the Uman pocket in late July and early August. After this, the 3rd Romanian Army advanced to the Dneiper and acted as a security force. In early September, the Army crossed the Dneiper and set up an exposed defense in the Nogai steppe, where two Soviet armies soon attacked it. In a classic meeting engagement, each side fed troops into this fight. The Soviet tactics were primitive generally, consisting of massed infantry assaults on fixed positions. They did manage to overwhelm the front of the Romanian 5th Cavalry Brigade at Akimovka by sheer weight of numbers.Attacker: Romanian (5th Cavalry Brigade)
