Overview:
In early 1942, trying to keep the momentum of its first winter successes, Stalin threw in the fray its last remaining “mobile” reserves, the remnants of the airborne corps that had survived the first months of the war. The paratroopers were tasked to support the existing offensives and to harass the German rear. The first, and modest, drops were conducted in January. Then, Zhukov planned a vast and complex operation with the 4th Airborne Corps around Viazma to capture the city. Their efforts did not succeed. Lack of firepower and German tactical flexibility and resilience proved too much for the Red Army. Then, with the winter end coming, the 4. Armee reacted, trying to get rid of the paratroopers nuisance. Counterattacks started from early march on, despite the environmental conditions. One of these occurred at dawn on 13 March, against the Soviet “stronghold” around Gorbachi village.Attacker: Russian (Paratroopers of the 9th Airborne Brigade)
