Overview:
It was vital that the Ipo and Wawa Dams northeast of Manila be captured intact so that the water supply to the city could be maintained. The 38th Infantry Division was tasked with clearing the approaches west and south of Wawa Dam near the Bosoboso River. The terrain here was extremely rugged with dozens of razor-back ridges separated by deep gorges, all covered in dense jungle. One key ridge that dominated the area was nicknamed “Woodpecker Ridge” because of the constant chatter of Japanese machineguns along its slopes. It needed to be cleared before further advance was possible. Quad-.50-cal halftracks and a platoon of the new M%A1 “Satan” flamethrower tanks were brought forward to assist in the attack.Attacker: American (Reinforced elements of 152nd Infantry Regiment, 38th Infantry Division)
