Overview:

The battle for Kursk had begun. After breaching the first line of defense, the 86. Infanterie-Division supported by the gigantic Ferdinand tank destroyers of schwere Panzer-Abteilung 654 continued toward the Russians' second defensive belt. But the Russian 27th Guards Tank Regiment supported by engineers was about to mount a counter-attack. The Germans would pay in blood for every inch gained of Russian soil.- - - - In the mid-sized 5.5-turn "Elephants Unleashed", a German combined arms force fight their way through minefields, wire, Russian infantry and counterattacking T-34s. Find out for yourself if the lack of a bow machine gun was really the Ferdinand's Archilles' Heel.
Attacker: German (Panzer-Division 18, Infanterie-Division 86 and schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654)
Defender: Russian (81st Rifle Division and 275th Separate Engineer Battalion and 27th Guards and 1442nd Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment)

2025-01-31(A) Andy Bagley vs Jim Traver Russian winThis ought to be a really good scenario with exciting AFV combat. But this game wasn't, because by turn 2 FOUR of my six AFVs had malf'ed their MA, and the one that tried to repair rolled a six to break it. The few shots I did get off all missed, so with just two functioning tanks against seven Russian AFVs, there was no point in playing on, and I conceded. My unluckiest game ever?
2024-07-21(D) Vic Lauterbach vs JM German winVery good, close game! I had the defending Soviets, and the first three shots from the Elephants were a hit, an Improbable Hit [C3.6] (dr=5 miss), and a CH. Scratch two T-34s. Turn 3 was a disaster as a 75 HEAT CH took out another T-34 and my defenders in building 33R6 all broke under fire from the captured HMG in S8. I used a SU-152 to knock out a PzIIIN driving for the exit knowing the Elephants wouldn't move until it fired. I missed both exiting Elephants, so it came down to stopping Jim's infantry AND keeping two Panzers from driving off the south edge of board 44. The last T-34 and one SU-152 took out two squads but one squad plus the crew of the knocked out PzIIIN exited. Jim had 22 exit VP, and I couldn't stop his last squad and both Panzers! Jim: This one really feels like Kursk. The armor fight swirled around the infantry fight as we both tried to get rear TK shots. I gambled by sending the 467s to exit off board 33 and using the rest of my force to take buildings and cover the Elephants exit. The battle for the buildings tied up Vic's reinforcements, but the key was a PzIIIN AFPh H9 shot at the rear of a SU-152, DR 10, no Heat, HE shot, hit, TK [per C7.21] DR=2, immobilized! Without his second mobile SU-152, I had it. Stopping three of four exiting units with two AFVs is worse than a 7-10 split!
