Overview:

The 8th Panzer Division was part of a relief operation the Germans were mounting on the small city of Lauban, which had been encircled by the Soviets. Aufklarungs Abteilung 59 was tasked with screening the right flank if the 8th Panzer Division by securing and establishing a blocking positions around the crossroads of Cunzendorf. In the early light of dawn, Oberleutant Teltz and four men of the recon battalion spotted Soviet tanks and infantry preparing to attack the crossroads. The four day battle for Cunzendorf was about to begin.

2022-05-08(A) Andy Bagley vs Oddgeir Drevdal German winA tough and bloody scenario for both sides. Seeing the German setup, I decided to concentrate my attack in the North. The plan was to blast his defensive line in Row Z with heavy firepower and then try to get my tanks behind his lines whilst the infantry moved forward. This quickly unravelled however, as concentrated firepower from my kill stack failed to inflict any damage whilst his A-T AFVs started taking a toll on my tanks. By turn 3 I was getting desperate and ran a 'decoy' force round the brush and into the southern buildings which the Germans had vacated. This drew a lot of German firepower, most of it ineffective, and this in turn enabled me to launch a Human Wave with my remaining infantry in the north. This went fairly well (apart from my 8-1 leader getting shot dead), and for a while it looked as though I was in with a chance. I even knocked out his OP tank, hence eliminating any OBA. But fortunes changed again on turn 4, when once again i couldn't hit a thing whilst the Germans were on a roll. A critical exchange of fire resulted in me rolling a 10 whilst my opponent rolled a 4 in reply, and this pretty much sealed the game. In the end I had not quite reached the required number of victory buildings, and was outnumbered by the Germans who were now counterattacking, so I conceded. I was left wondering whether I would have been better launching my attack in the South.
2021-01-07(A) patrick palma vs Juan Russian win
2011-12-20(A) Andy Beaton vs Victor Behar Russian winTough fight for the Germans if they fail to bring in the OBA - maybe too tough.
2011-05-15(D) David Ramsey vs Martin Barker Russian winNot sure what to do here as the Germans. Feels like you're attacking, with half the men that the Russians have against better quality troops.
2011-04-01(D) Fred Ingram vs Paul Chamberland Russian winThis was Paul’s first time at the Open and thus our first time playing. I set up in a pretty straight continuous line of Germans across the entire board with both Hetzers on my right flank and the other armor on the left flank (including 2 “dummy” vehicles). The OP tank in the middle and the 250sMG was in bypass in the back ready to unload passengers to take the AA MG as a dm HMG. Paul decides to bank his entire attack down my right flank. He comes in cautious probing brush, buildings, and woods for my 2 hidden tank killer crews finding no one (as they were on my weak left flank). I get a shock on one vehicle (which went unconfirmed kill and then dead in subsequent rally phases). He breaks a few MA taking shots at my Hetzers, and things are looking pretty good for the Germans. Turn 3 he moves a tank and my Hetzer fires/misses, then intensive and misses, so he makes a bum rush at it with the rest of his armor trying to get past. The infantry rise to the cause and take out 2 vehicles with panzerfausts but break in the process. He got one tank deep in my backfield. His infantry creep up behind. Still looks great for the Germans. Turns 4 and 5 broke the Germans back. The OBA (which was not very effective for the missions it did get) stopped contributing. His infantry was thus able to move right up into the fray. It was a disaster. Almost all of my infantry broke, including the units from the left flank I had moved over to help. My infantry sent to take out the tank in the backfield threatening a crew abandonment were badly out of position (although they were successful). Seeing he had an open path to take as many buildings as he needed, I conceded on turn 5.
