Overview:
The attack on the 23rd, while rebuffed on the east side of Cholm, had succeeded in claiming the western section. This presented General Scherer with a very serious situation if the Russians were able to renew offensive operations sooner than he could, he might well be forced to abandon the town altogether, seeing that the enemy was now very much inside his doorstep. On the 27th, Scherer felt able to mount just such a counterattack, employing both forces at his disposal within the eastern side of the town and supported in his effort by friendly forces approaching from the southwest. The Luftwaffe was also called upon to lend its weight to the reclamation effort.Attacker: German (Kampfgruppe Scherer)
