Overview:

As part of the May Day offensive, the Russians mounted an attack into Block 38. During the attack, Senior Lt. Koshkin's tank became immobilized in the mud when its drive wheel was sheared off. There were no other tanks in the area to tow the stricken vehicle out of the morass; they were either committed elsewhere to the attack or undergoing repair. The tank lay roughly 300 meters inside German lines. To avoid being destroyed in place, Koshkin conserved his ammunition and supply of grenades that he used to fend off German attacks, even so he began to run low on all means of self-defense, barring his pistol. The Russian battalion commander in the area ordered a detachment to break into the German perimeter, drive off the enemy and resupply the tank with machinegun ammunition and grenades so it could continue to hold out until a tow could be arranged.
