Overview:

The American 37th Infantry Division was closing in on the Japanese 14th Army Headquarters at Baguio. Gen. Yamashita had only the 5th Company, 10th Tank Regiment as his reserve. This company had three medium and two light tanks. Since Japanese tanks could not fight toe-to-toe against Sherman tanks, Yamashita directed the company to conduct suicide attacks with their tanks. Japanese crews attached explosives to the front hull of a Type 97 tanks and a Type 95 tanks. The 5th Company commander hid these tanks in bamboo along Route 9 down which he expected the Americans to advance. That morning 2nd Battalion, 148th Infantry sent two companies of infantry supported by Shermans, M-7 HMCs and M-18 tank destroyers down Route 9. The kamikaze tanks charged the Shermans as the rounded a bend in the road.
