Overview:

The II SS Panzer Corps had made good progress into the heart of the 6th Guards Army defenses. General Vatutin ordered the 5th Guards Tank Corp to prepare to meet this threat. The Russian “counterattack” was not successful in blocking the Germans, but prevented them from exploiting the penetration. The 51st Guards Rifle Division suffered heavily, and was forced into defensive positions around Bolshoi-Majatschki and Iakovlevo. The 1st Battalion, SS Panzergrenadier Regiment 1 was ordered to attack to the west to seize the two towns.
