Overview:
By February, elements from the Soviet 297th Rifle Division had successfully fought their way toward the Southern Railway Station. After two days of heavy fighting, infantry aided by Soviet armored units had isolated the area around the station and encircled the defending “Florian Geyer” squadrons. Because of the Deli Palyaudvar’s strategic importance as the last major fortified structure west of the Vermezo, the exhausted and malnourished German troops were ordered to hold their defensive positions as relief was on its way. On 8 February, one such relief attempt was made by a platoon from the Hungarian 102nd Chemical Warfare Battalion.Attacker: Russian (297th Rifle Division and 3rd Tank Brigade, 23rd Tank Corps)
