Overview:

On 8 December 1941, the Japanese 38th Infantry Division received the code words "Hana-Saku, Hana-Saku" (literally "flowers abloom. flowers abloom") which signaled the start of the Japanese attack on the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong. The Kowloon peninsula was taken with only light casualties. A request to surrender Hong Kong Island was refused. During the night of 18/19 December the Japanese streamed across from the mainland. Canadian A Company, and one platoon of D Company, Winnipeg Grenadiers were ordered to hold Mt.Butler.
