Overview:

The initial German response to the Moselle River crossing near Arnaville came in the form of mortar and artillery fire on the crossing sites combined with a limited counterattack out of Arry around 0830. This attack was stopped but just past noon a company of Panzer Grenadiers accompanied by three Tiger tanks and other armored vehicles attacked the Americans on the exposed slopes of Hill 386. panic-stricken, the men of 1st and 2nd platoons ran down the hills for the woods and more cover. To prevent a full-scale rout, the Tigers would have to be stopped.
