Overview:

The Germans had decided to unlock the Soviet defense system by resorting to a bold move: the landing of units ashore directly behind Soviet lines using fast assault boats. While the Italian Navy was making a diversionary maneuver, the Germans landed their troops ashore. Incredibly, the Soviets did not detect the move until well after the assault troops had started landing. Then, all hell broke loose.

2021-11-12(A) Andy Bagley vs Mike Grogan German winDifficult to comment on play-balance here because the dice were clearly on my side, particularly for the 81mm mortar (which I set up south of the river) which scored TWO critical hits, knocking out the Russian ART gun and one MMG. The Russians decided, probably wisely, not to defend the Board 3a village at all. Instead they placed delaying forces near the two southern-most victory buildings, with the bulk of their forces defending the hilltops, In response, my boats came across on the extreme right (east), and got ashore with virtually no losses thanks to a combination of smoke and LV hindrance.
The Russian delaying forces proved insufficient and the two VC buildings south of the hills soon fell. Then - aided by a hero - I was able to surround the Easternmost hilltop VC location before their reinforcements could reach it to help. A couple more good DRs helped me to secure that position, and the Russian conceded on turn 6. A good scenario, although not much for the Russians to do other than static defence as their forces lack mobility.
2021-07-24(A) Rich Weiley vs Dave Wallace German winEverything went right for the Germans in the first 3 turns which set me up to go for the victory. The bulk of the attackers crossed the river between hexrows N and G on board 40 and the two lightly defended VP locations on board 40 fell rapidly. The game turned on the battle over the last three turns to take the final victory location in 9H5. This turned into as back and forth slugfest as the Germans struggled up the hill in the face of enfilading fire from Hill 733 from the artillery piece and a Commissar directed firegroup and a reverse slope defence on Hill 654 itself. German casualties mounted rapidly. Just in time the Gun was neutralised and the Commissar fell to the sniper, relieving enough pressure for the Germans to secure the last needed victory location.

In the west the assault engineers served mainly as a threat to pin down the defenders in the castle. They did launch a forlorn hope assault in the last couple of turns to threaten the 9Y6 victory location but this met a predictable end in the "Valley of Death " around EE7/DD6.
