Overview:
"Exiting Cut-throat Gorge" -- Placed to the north of the French Expeditionary Corps, the mission of the 1st Division de Marche lnfanterie, as part of Operation "Diadem" was to cover the flank between the Garigliano and the Liri Rivers. Heir to the 1st Free French Brigade, renowned for its stand at Bir Hakeim, the unit always preferred the title "Free French Division." But like their comrades in the CEF from the Army of Africa, it initially met strong German resistance. This was particularly the case for the armored group, which strengthened the organic elements of the CEF with American tanks. They crossed the Garigliano on the night of 11th May to crush the defenses of the 71st Infantry Division. Several tanks belonging to the 8th Regiment of Chasseurs d'Afrique, bogged down in soft ground at the end of the “cutthroat“ gorge.
