Overview:

As elements of the 3rd Marine Division pushed eastward to expand its beachhead on Bouganville, 1st Lt. Steve Cibik’s reinforced platoon was ordered to occupy a small knoll with a commanding view of Empress Augusta Bay. Shortly after arriving, the Marines routed a group of approaching Japanese, and at noon repulsed an organized attack. Cibik requested reinforcements which later arrived in the form of a 60mm mortar section. The Marines spent a quiet but nervous night. The next morning, however, things changed. . .
Attacker: Japanese (23rd Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division)

2016-12-14(D) Jeff B vs Scott Sherer Japanese win6.5 hrs3 Japanese columnar squads got taken out by ambush on the first turn, after which the Americans pulled back to the hill. Things were a bit quiet for the next few turns as the Japanese slogged their way up the hill maintaining concealment. Turn 4 saw two of the three Japanese leaders go down and things were looking a bit grim for them, but they continued to push the Americans backward into an ever-tightening circle. The key move came for the Japanese when they were able to sneak a squad around the back forcing Cibik and his kill stack to try and shoot their way out of the encircling Japanese clutches. The dice did not go their way and they all were eliminated for failure to rout. But the Americans were not out yet. With a half turn to go the Japanese clung to the slightest of margins. All the Americans needed to do was take back one hex in CC with a 9 or less. "11" was rolled an game over. Fun game!
