Overview:

After the drubbing they received at Moulmein, the British made haste to cover the crossings of the Salween River in an ultimately futile attempt to forestall the Japanese advance. Meanwhile, beginning in early February, the Japanese began aggressive probes and night crossings all along the Salween River. Several attempted boat crossings aimed at Martaban – directly across from Moulmein – had been driven off. But the defenders were under constant artillery and aerial bombardment, and crossings upriver could not be prevented. Once the Japanese were across in strength, they began probing the British defenses along the western bank. Near the village of Kuziek, which guarded a river crossing at Pa'an, the defense consisted of a battalion of thinly-spread Indian troops.
Attacker: Japanese (2nd Battalion, 215th Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Division)

2025-02-09(A) Vic Lauterbach vs JM Japanese winI drew the attacking Japanese in this early CBI theater clash. Night adds to the attackers' advantages, so we agreed that "Known" in the recon/banzai line of SSR2 did not meet the LOS requirement of A25.23 so E1.101 and E1.33 applied. (Note: I didn't want to conduct a Banzai charge on Turn 1 anyway, but SSR2 needs errata to clarify the designer's intent.) In turn 1, Jim's Indian infantry proved to be good marksmen and killed two squads and my 9-0. That worried me, but you have to just charge and hope for the best! The whole Japanese force is expendable, and I lost 17 CVP, including 3 of 4 SMC, to Jim's 23. It came down to killing broken British MMC in CC which I did. Jim: Instead of using the whole Japanese force to hit one VC area then moving the other, Vic attacked both areas simultaneously. It was risky but paid off. I opted to keep the Indian MGs in the center to interdict any Japanese moving from one VC area to the other. The MGs did some damage but not enough. When I was down to just my 8-0 and two GO 228s, we called it. This one comes down to how well you do in HtH CC which is a two-edged sword. Mutual elimination favors the Japanese though. This one is tough on the British but oddly it was the most fun in a night scenario I've ever had.
