Overview:

The 307th Rifle Division was hardly a defeated force despite a severe battering at the hands of the Germans. At 0600 hours on 8 July the Division, having regrouped its forces during the night, launched a counter-offensive and drove the Germans out of their incursion. In the face of aggressive enemy action, German commanders continued to exhort and order their main force forward in an attempt to capture the Ponyri defensive center and break through to the south. All such efforts were thwarted, and the front was stabilized. After losing thousands dead and wounded, as well as many tanks, the Germans were unable to continue the offensive.
