Overview:

By early July, one of the remaining pockets of Japanese resistance on Saipan was in the vicinity of Paradise Valley, facing the U.S. 27th Division. The main access point to the valley was a deep draw, which was nicknamed ‘Harakiri Gulch’ after some 60 Japanese soldiers were found dead, inexplicably by their own hands. With several attacks thrown back by Japanese hidden in caves on the sides of the gulch, Col. Bishop decided to send two companies of infantry over the high ground to flank the Japanese positions, which now included a disabled US tank stuck in the gulch. Light tanks would be brought up in support.
Attacker: American (Elements of 136th Infantry Regiment)
