Overview:
Beginning in April 1944, the 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts arrived in Moldavia, on the eastern edge of Romania, pushing before them tired and decimated opposing units. Far from pausing to replenish its weakened forces, the Red Army, urged by Stalin, was preparing to resume its forward march into the Balkans. However, the 3rd Ukrainian Front could advance only with difficulty, significantly slowed by the muddy terrain and destruction carried out by the Germans. Additionally, the 2nd Ukrainian Front under Koniev, had been quickly stalled by the German and Romanian forces. Although chastened by this reverse, Koniev prepared a new offensive in conjunction with the 3rd Ukrainian Front. The 3rd Ukrainian was unable to participate due to its own growing losses, so at 0515 on 2nd May, more than a thousand guns and mortars pounded the Axis positions north of Targu Frumos as Koniev attacked alone. But the defenders were ready…Attacker: German (Elements GrossDeutschland Rifle Regt. & 24th Panzer Division)
Defender: Russian (Elements 3rd Guards Airborne Division & 16th Tank Corps)
