Overview:

On 6th July, after manhandling the 284th Rifle Division, supported by the few remaining tanks in the 16th Tank Corps, the 11th Panzer Division, under General Balck, learnt that its neighbor, the 9th Panzer Division had undergone a strong Russian armored assault. This was the 7th Tank Corps, first echelon of General Liziukov’s 5th Army, which hoped to defeat the panzers northwest of Voronezh. The Soviet push did make easy ground initially due to weak resistance, but they had engaged their forces in penny packets, which bought time for the Germans to concentrate their forces. By 8th July, the 7th Army’s lead elements were facing the 2 panzer divisions of the 24th Panzer Corps, with the 11th Panzer Division now located on the western flank of the 9th. Heavy fighting broke out around the Soukhaia Vereika River and some villages held by the Germans.
