Overview:
The primary obstacle confronting the German Third Army was the fortified town of Mlawa, one of Poland’s few heavily fortified positions. This strong point blocked the primary roads out of East Prussia, and overcoming it would be no easy task. The Germans faced prepared fields of fire, interlocking trench lines, and antitank obstacles formed by railroad tracks embedded into ground with concrete. Panzer Detachment Kempf was assigned the difficult mission to attack in this zone, and consisted of the 7th Panzer Regiment, SS Standarte Deutschland Regiment and the 37th Pioneer Battalion.
