Overview:

In the aftermath of Operation CITADEL, Soviet attacks in the Ukraine followed the usual pattern: masses of med and machines thrown at the lines of Panzerkorps III, only to be thrown back by German counterattacks. However each time the new front line would be further west. In an effort to flank the SS divisions defending west of Kharkov, Major General Ivan Galanin’s 4th Guards Army threw more fresh troops at Hoernlein’s “Grossdeutshland” Division.

2025-05-09(A) Andy Bagley vs Matt Ellis Russian winMy first playing of this classic scenario started badly for the Russians with well-placed German fire-lanes disrupting my initial assault. Still, I pressed forward steadily despite some losses, and by turn 4 had managed to take three multi-hex buildings. The German forces were still largely intact, although I had broken his 81mm mortar crew, making it very difficult for him to evacuate this gun.
Things started to turn as the Germans attempted to withdraw however: a critical fine lane failed when the firing unit cowered, and another 'rearguard' broke, meaning my units could run through the centre unopposed. The decisive moment was when his SPW251/sMG, complete with HMG and crew trying to exit, was knocked out by a fortunate ATR shot, at which point my opponent conceded. Great scenario though (rare example of a rearguard action) with lots to do for both sides.
2025-05-04(A) Louis Langdeau vs Derek R Russian win3.5 hrsInteresting scenario. Derek hadn't played in a while, and the deployment in this scenario for the Germans is extremely odd. Lots of considerations that need to go into how you can set up to block the Russians from swarming, while also giving yourself a way to pull back. I took full advantage of my deploy capability and jammed half squads as aggressively as I could to try and break up my opponent's flanks, and around turn 3 I got a couple good results to unseat a lot of Derek's strong points. Derek couldn't make a rally to safe his life, and I started FTRing a bunch of his troops. At end of T4 I got 3 multi-hex buildings, and by the time we were going into German Turn 5, I had enough points about to exit that it wasn't mathematically possible for him to catch up.

Like I said, interesting scenario. German deployment asks a lot of questions, and it feels like there's a good layout there if you can find it. Finding it is the tricky part though! Going to give it another try in the future as the Germans to test that out.

2024-01-31(D) Jeff Wright vs Tom Repetti German win

2023-03-03(D) Paul Legg vs David Ramsey Russian win
2023-03-03(A) David Ramsey vs Paul Legg Russian winExcellent scenario! Although principally this is in infantry only game, there's a lot to it. The decision points for the Germans as to whether to gamble with the HMG and MTR up-front or safer, but less effective at the back means there's a constant pressure to decide whether it's worth revealing units to make your defence sturdier meaning the withdrawal becomes more difficult is a great element.

In this playing, the HMG was up front, but eventually overrun, and with it the 9-2, whilst the mortar revealed itself only to miss its only shot and have the crew break and die for failure to rout instantly - essentially losing the 16 points that were sorely needed after the Russians took 3 buildings for the 9 points at the start.

Nice scenario - really recommended.
2023-03-01(D) Pascal Boileau vs Nicolas Munsch German winA tremendous scenario. The Russians entered with three groups from west to east. The center group was stopped but the two others moved swiftly and unmolested towards the exit. Withdrawal don't go very well for the German side but some lucky rolls just before the last turn flipped the issue of the game in their favor at the end.
2023-02-17(D) Ian Morris vs Martin Mayers Russian win
2022-12-30(A) Maurizio Mai vs Alessandro De Michelis German winGreat scenario! I opted to push the attack on the right side. Couple of mistakes with the rules, but mainly forgot the VC on the building control (at the end of 4thturn, not Game End), and didn't win twice a 2vs1 CC that would have released a stack and got 3 VCs. German very solid, defence withdrawal tactic well executed. Nice scenario, I would definitely replay it.
2022-10-08(A) Michael Rodgers vs Joe Divine German winThis is a neat scenario for its VC and for both sides being elite. An added plus is the Russians can deploy. It was tough to know who was going to win until the last turn. Ended with German 27 to Russian 18.
2022-06-12(D) Martí Cabré vs Federico Mazzucchelli Russian winRound 5 of Roma 2022. I was the Germans and had a defense in depth, as I did not know which would be the direction of attack. The Russians attacked from the east, with only a few stacks in the center position to pin my units, but I stalled them using dummies. Each turn I managed to fight the withdrawal a little, losing some units but killing lots of Russians. The Russians never stopped running and did not manage to take any building, but managed to keep broken my MTR crew, while the AA MG crew managed to escape with its halftrack. On the last turn many units from both sides managed to exit, for a close score.
2022-04-23(A) Michal Sedlacko vs Herbert Heyman Russian win[Imported from ROAR]
2022-01-25(A) Rob MacGinley vs James Short Russian winThe Russians can set up a very nasty Human Wave that busts thru the line and leaves teh Germans responding t o it
I went thru the centre and he was unable to block the move off board
2021-11-13(A) Len Kay vs Chuck Tewksbury German win[Imported from ROAR]
2021-02-21(D) Richard Jenulis vs Greg Rodgers Russian winNWASL Championship 2021. The Russian went all out on their right flank. They took 6 VP of buildings for the turn four contition. The Germans did not have enough EVP on turn 7 to equal or better the Russians. IMO the Russians can win without the ability to deploy.
2021-01-18(D) Vilis Pavulans vs Erik Grande German winProbably a very nice scenario and as a german I thought that this would be damn near impossible with all those 8 ML russians with the right to deploy but with unreasonable luck on nearly all shots, I broke most russians and on turn 3 I killed the 9-1 and 9-2 with lucky shots and there wasn´t much sense in playing on. In our game much of the joy was taken from us by the dice.
2020-12-28(A) X von Marwitz vs Alex Koestler Russian winI selected this scenario because I thought it would be just a big all-infantry slugfest with not much to think about and with mistakes made being able to compensated due to the number of units involved on both sides. With hindsight I have to admit that I underestimated this scenario. Both the Russians and the Germans need to make careful considerations when to sit tight, when to fall back, and how audacious to be on the attack. The SSR providing a lot of extra value to the two half-tracks - provided they evacuate the onboard 81mm MTR and the HMG and the possibility to gain extra EVP in case the capture multi-hex buildings by the end of Turn 4 add a lot to ponder about. Furthermore, the Germans move last. In short, this scenario has many tactical challenges and it was a whole lot of fun to play. Among the best I played in 2020. Both my opponent gave it an 8 out of 9 on ROAR, the current ROAR Excitement Rating after 36 reports is 7.22 and on the ASL Scenario Archive even 7.58 after 12 votes. On top of that, ROAR currently (as of 28. December 2020) balanced at 19 Russian wins vs. 19 German wins. So we might have a little gem here...

In the end after a tough and hairraising battle, my Russians prevailed.

2020-05-09(D) Peter Palmer vs John Knowles German win[Imported from ROAR]
2019-03-28(A) Jeff B vs Ivan Kent Russian winMy attacking Russians split their force equally on each flank, with a substantial supporting force in the center to prevent easy German shifting and to provide pressure on the two closest buildings (which I intended to grab for the extra VPs). I was quite concerned about locating his mortar as early as I could as its presence prevented me from doing too much stack movement. It took a shot toward the end of my Turn 1 moves and immediately was gone for good, having rolled a "12" being manned by non-qualified personnel (Ivan choosing to place the crew back in the village to allow easier escape once the AFVs entered). Ivan used a lot of foxholes and chose to retain concealment for the most part, which made my job of exposing units/dummies a bit daunting. He held me up in the middle of the board for a good turn or two with what proved to be dummies. He had positioned some key units on the flanks in some solid defensive positions. The eastern flank was a bit easier to crack as it had more cover, but the theme of the attack turned out to be swarm, surround, and CC. With 8 morale the defenders should definitely consider FPF. If it wasn't for the ability of the Russians to deploy I think it would be a pretty insurmountable job for them, but the Germans are outnumbered by a decent margin and need to cover a fairly wide initial front. Fun scenario that I would play again from either side.
2018-01-21(D) David Garvin vs Magnus Rimvall German win
2018-01-14(A) Andy Beaton vs Richard Hooks Russian winRussians went entirely down their left flank, lost a few squads but overran the mortar and gunned down the HMG crew before they could escape the village. Germans had a choice of exiting through the woods and abandoning the buildings or trying to fight their way past Russians overlooking the road, and chose to concede instead.
2017-10-06(D) Jason Wert vs Rich Domovic Russian winGreat game with Rich in Rnd 2 of the Mother Russia Mini. The Germans strung out along the woodline with hopes of slowly withdrawing, but the Russians got the edge on the right flank and rolled to victory.
2017-09-08(D) Diane Spangler vs Lawrence SpanglerD German win
2017-09-08(A) Lawrence Spangler vs Diane Spangler German win
2017-08-28(A) Stephen dedier vs Holt, Jim German winVery close run game. I think I spent too much time worrying about the building VP when I might have exploited a breakthrough and pushed much more of my force to the exit end. I could not stop the 2 halftracks from getting on and off and a rate tear tore up a 4.5 squad group + a leader keeping them from getting off the board.
2017-08-12(A) Michael Rodgers vs Gregg Lupaczyk Russian winI played newish player Gregg Lupaczyk in Tussle round 4. He told me that he had been playing around a year or so, but this was not his first tournament. We went with my first choice, J188 GRAB AND GO. Dice gave the Russian attackers to me. My rough plan was to put enough forces in the middle to take two multi-hex buildings by the end of turn 4 for extra points, and to send flanking forces up both sides to see what they could do. Things did not start well. One of the two buildings had two squads with two LMG; these fellows refused to break for many fire phases. In fact, I have never been so unmercifully diced in a game and still manage to win ( without any help from my dice, I might add ). It was brutal. Gregg's coloured die had an iron cross for the one pip and I saw more iron crosses during that game than I have seen in my life. Somehow, I eventually cleared those fellows out in time to have the two buildings worth six exit VP. When the halftracks came on the board, the Russians were within reach of them with one ATR and foot soldiers. My 9-2 finally did some good by CCing the SPW 251/2 before it could load up and leave; as a bonus the mortar crew died as well. The German HMG also went down to CC when Gregg's dice momentarily cooled off. That CC also generated a leader for the Russians that helped them exit 1.5 squads. The final tally was 14 German VP to 18 Russian VP.
2017-07-16(A) Gordon Jupp vs Nick Holmshaw Russian winRussians pushed hard and over ran the German mortar, exited 20+ EVP on the right flank and held sufficient Germans to prevent them exiting.
2017-07-07(A) Gordon Jupp vs Derek Cox German winReally good scenario that went to the last turn. I managed to turn the right flank and took two multi hex buildings by turn 4 but the game swung badly for the Russians when the German mortar opened up and went on a rate tear, killing 2 squads and a leader in the process. Managed to kill the HMG HT in CC but could only get one Squad off for a total of 8 VP. The Germans exited more....Well worth a play and I would do it again!

2017-02-28(D) Øyvind Jacobsen Bjørkås vs Søren Russian win
2017-02-25(A) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best German winAnother great game that came down to the final German movement phase as Dan exited 26 points to my 23. I attempted to flank the Germans along both board edges with my main thrust along east edge. I ran right into the German 9-2 and HMG as well as the 8cm Mortar. But I nearly pulled it off. Great defensive effort by Dan to get the win.
