Overview:

General Patton ordered the 1st and 9th Infantry Divisions to attack along Gabes Road south-east of El Guetter. Operationally, the attack was intended to both draw Axis forces from the main Allied attack that had penetrated the Mareth Line in southern Tunisia on 27 March and allow mobile American units to cut off Axis formations before they could withdraw to the north. Just before dawn, the 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division began its advance against Italian positions on El Hamra Ridge south-east of El Guetter.
Attacker: American (3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division)
